River and Trail Safety Guide

🚨 Yak Shack Safety GuideUpdated for all Watercraft & Land-Based Activities

Yak Shack is committed to providing safe, fun, and memorable experiences across all of our offerings. Whether you’re floating, paddling, biking, or hiking, please review the following guidelines. These rules apply to all guests and are designed for your safety, the protection of others, and the preservation of the Little Miami River and Scenic Trail.

1. Personal Safety Equipment

  • All watercraft users (kayak, canoe, paddleboard, raft, tube) must wear a properly fitted U.S. Coast Guard–approved life jacket (PFD) at all times while on the water. Failure to comply may result in denied participation.
  • All bike riders must wear a helmet at all times while riding. Helmets are provided by Yak Shack or may be pre-approved.
  • Walking or hiking guests should wear comfortable, closed-toe shoes and consider reflective gear when walking early or late in the day.

2. River & Trail Conditions

  • River flow and trail conditions can change quickly due to weather and other factors. Always check the latest updates before beginning your trip.
  • Yak Shack will delay, reroute, or cancel trips when conditions are unsafe—no exceptions.
  • If forecasted storms, lightning, or severe weather are expected during your trip, Yak Shack reserves the right to delay, shorten, or cancel trips to protect guest safety. Guests will be notified as early as possible.
  • Visit NWS Forecast – Oregonia, OH for real-time weather updates.

3. Age & Supervision Requirements

  • Tubes: Minimum age is 15.
  • 🛶 Canoes: Children under 15 must be accompanied by an adult and remain within arm’s reach on the water.
  • 🛶 Kayaks: Participants must be 15 and strong enough to paddle, re-enter their kayak if needed, and follow safety instructions.
  • 🏄 Paddleboards: Minimum age is 15. Use requires balance and water awareness. Not recommended for inexperienced or non-swimmers.
  • 🚲 Bikes: Riders under 15 must be accompanied by an adult. Proper bike size will be fitted by Yak Shack staff.
  • 🚫 For safety reasons, Yak Shack does not permit children under 6 in our boats or rentals.
  • 🚶 Walkers: Children must be supervised and within close proximity at all times.

4. Positioning & Equipment Use

  • 🛶 Canoes: Front paddler sets pace; back paddler steers. Stay seated and balanced at all times.
  • 🛶 Kayaks: Stay centered and seated. Adjust footrests for balance. Remain in control of your vessel.
  • 🏄 Paddleboards: Kneeling or sitting is strongly encouraged. Many guests prefer to kneel or sit for their entire paddleboard trip—this is the safest and most stable way to enjoy the river, and it is fully supported by Yak Shack staff. Standing is not necessary and should only be attempted in calm water by experienced users. There is no expectation to stand—choose what makes you feel most confident.
  • ⭕ Tubes: Sit fully inside the center of the tube. One person per tube. No pets. No straddling or standing.
  • 🚲 Bikes: Ride single file in narrow or busy areas. Stay on designated paved trails. Do not swap bikes without staff approval.
  • 🚶 Walkers: Stay to the right. Yield to oncoming trail users. Keep group spacing tight to avoid blocking paths.

5. Hazard Awareness

  • Hazards can include strainers (fallen trees), shallow rocks, submerged logs or branches, bridge piers, low branches, and other natural or man-made obstructions. These may not be visible until it is too late so stay aware and alert at all times.
  • All participants should steer clear of logs, steep banks, submerged obstacles, areas with poor visibility, and narrow or obstructed passages. These areas can be unpredictable and increase the risk of tipping, collision, or entrapment.
  • If you fall out of a watercraft: Float on your back with feet pointed downstream. Never stand in moving water until you are safely in the shallows. Foot entrapment can occur in rocky areas.
  • Cyclists must remain alert for pedestrians, sharp turns, road crossings, and trail debris.
  • Walkers should watch for fast-moving bikes and approach trail crossings with caution.

6. Group Safety & Communication

  • Always stay within sight and sound of your group. Do not rely solely on phones, which may lose signal.
  • Use verbal signals, hand gestures, or bells when needed.
  • Designate a group leader and sweeper (last person) for larger outings.
  • Never tie ropes around your body, another person, or your equipment.

7. Route & Return Awareness

  • Know your entry and exit points before starting your trip.
  • Yak Shack staff will provide visual cues and route briefings. Do not bypass designated exits.
  • It is very difficult to or you will not be able to return upstream—missing an exit will result in long delays and additional fees.
  • Bikes must be returned to the designated Yak Shack check-in zone in good condition.

8. Personal Gear & Electronics

  • Use a dry bag or waterproof case for valuables.
  • Do not bring items that you are unwilling to lose to water or impact.
  • Bikes: Avoid loose or hanging clothing that could become caught in pedals or gears.
  • Walkers: Be prepared for sun, rain, or changing trail conditions. Carry a phone for emergencies.

9. Alcohol & Substance Use

  • No alcohol or drug use is allowed during any Yak Shack activity. This includes float trips, bike rides, and trail walks, jogs or runs.
  • Ohio law prohibits open containers on the river and trails.
  • Yak Shack staff reserves the right to refuse service or remove participants who appear impaired or who violate this rule.

10. Conservation & Clean-Up

  • Leave nature better than you found it—pack out all trash.
  • Do not disturb wildlife or remove natural objects. Stay on the designated trail or waterway.
  • Cyclists: Stay on paved paths only. Walkers: Do not cut through wooded areas or unmarked trails.
  • Join our Onion Bag Program: Return a filled trash bag and receive a $5 reward.
    • Only collect safe, lightweight trash. Do not attempt to retrieve large, sharp, submerged or difficult to reach debris. Yak Shack is not responsible for injury resulting from clean-up efforts.

11. Emergency Procedures

  • In case of injury or serious emergency, call 911 immediately. Note and use nearby trail landmarks to describe your location.
  • Then call Yak Shack at (513) 334-6979 to report the incident and request assistance.
  • For non-urgent issues (equipment failure, delays), Yak Shack staff will assist you as quickly as possible.

Thank you for choosing Yak Shack. Your safety is our top priority. Stay alert, respect the water and the trail, and enjoy your adventure!

🚨 River Safety & Conditions Guide

At Yak Shack, your safety is our top priority. The Little Miami River offers scenic beauty and fun for all ages — but river conditions can change quickly with rainfall and current. Please review the following safety guidelines and river level recommendations before booking your trip.

🚨 Caesar Creek Dam Releases

The Little Miami River in our region is directly affected by water releases from Caesar Creek Dam, located upstream. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) manages the dam and may release water based on flood control needs, rainfall accumulation, and reservoir management.

These dam releases can:

  • Cause rapid increases in river level and current
  • Create unsafe paddling conditions even when local rainfall is minimal
  • Affect conditions with little notice

Yak Shack continuously monitors these changes, but we strongly encourage guests to stay informed as well.

⚠️ Note: Always check river levels before arriving. Yak Shack reserves the right to cancel or delay trips when river levels, dam releases or weather (current or forecasted) make paddling unsafe.

🛶 Paddle Smart, Paddle Safe

Whether you’re a weekend adventurer or a seasoned paddler, staying informed is key. Fast-moving water can be deceptive — always respect the river and know your limits.
